- Fortunately, the acquaintance of thought circles with Spinoza in Turkey coincides with the early years. Before the years when Spinoza was rediscovered in Europe, in 1945, the full text translation of Ethics was made by Hilmi Ziya Ülken. This initiative is the first of the decisive steps towards understanding Spinoza's philosophy, and the Spinoza effect has remained joyful and vibrant ever since.In his preface to Etika, Ülken states that we are faced with a very unique name in the history of philosophy. Is it possible to interpret in any way the philosophy of someone who offers us to freely know beings from the perspective of eternity? Perhaps the five episodes of Ethics can be compared to the five acts of a drama. In the first two chapters, concepts are defined, arranged and their relationships with each other are shown in a geometric order, and the curtain opens with the basic reasoning of classical philosophy: God, man, nature, soul and body... (Thoughts are reinforced with notes, proofs and explanations that come after the propositions). In the third chapter, we move on to the Definition of Emotions section - which probably brings Spinoza to the present day and makes Ethics a reference book. Joy, sorrow, grudge, pride, ridicule, contempt, envious people, magnanimity, desires and pleasures, etc. The true essence of the world we live in is depicted among many good and bad emotions. The fourth and fifth chapters are about passive (passion) emotions that make people weak, infinite intelligence and freedom.In short, ethics repeatedly reminds us how difficult the path we walk among all difficulties and spiritual fluctuations (indecisions) is, but it also advises us that we can achieve virtue only under the guidance of reason.This first translation of Ethics, the 13th revised edition of which we present, is a call to share in Spinoza's never-ending joy.
