TCP-IP Editorial Review

**** "Internetworking with TCP/IP Volume III: Client-Server Programming and Applications - BSD Socket Version" by Comer is lauded as an exemplary textbook for those delving into client-server programming within the UNIX environment. Over a decade of teaching experience has led one reviewer to proclaim it "perhaps the most perfect textbook ever written," citing his exquisite code and perfect explanations that make complex topics accessible and understandable. The book strikes a balance between technical detail and clarity, guiding readers through essential concepts of distributed computing while emphasizing strong client-server design principles. Students are cautioned that this is not a light read; they must engage deeply with its content rather than skim it like a novel. With an easy-to-navigate structure, the introductory sections are particularly praised for being gentle yet thorough, catering well to those with basic C programming knowledge. Readers appreciate the integrity of the code examples, often compiled smoothly on Linux systems, which serve as feasible blueprints for learners. While the book covers various topics, some critics note that the arrangement of wrapper functions throughout the chapters can lead to unnecessary backtracking, detracting slightly from the overall flow. Additionally, while the theoretical underpinnings of networking concepts are appreciated, the depth concerning tunneling and other advanced topics may deviate from the book's primary focus. Nevertheless, many agree that Comer presents multiple problem-solving techniques succinctly, fostering an understanding of programming trade-offs. This volume alongside its companion texts provides a comprehensive education in TCP/IP, securing its place as a classic resource for students and professionals alike. **
